In the spring of 2019, Land Rover's smallest SUV underwent a large-scale modernization, debuting on May 22 during an online presentation, and the technical metamorphoses were so significant that even the company itself is positioning the 2020 model year crossover “new, but still current, first, generation of the model "(as evidenced by its factory index - still" L550 ").
As a result of the restyling, the car practically did not change in appearance, having received only new bumpers, a radiator grill and LED optics, however, it "moved" to a new modular PTA platform, thanks to which it also acquired a more modern and spacious interior, an increased trunk and new options, and in European countries also got modifications with a "soft hybrid" makeweight.
Outside, the updated Land Rover Discovery Sport can only be recognized by the vertical cuts in the corners of the front bumper, made in the spirit of the “big” Discovery, the rest of the design innovations will have to be looked for with a magnifying glass - by and large they are all reduced to slightly redrawn bumpers, a radiator grille and lighting equipment ...
But you can't find fault with the exterior of the SUV - it looks attractive, harmonious and "thoroughbred".
Dimensions and weight
In terms of its dimensions, the crossover is a representative of the compact segment: length - 4597 mm, height - 1727 mm, width - 2069 mm (including side mirrors - 2173 mm). The wheelbase of the five-door is 2741 mm, and its ground clearance reaches 212 mm.
In curb form, the car weighs from 1869 to 1996 kg, depending on the modification, and its gross weight varies from 2550 to 2750 kg.
Interior
The interior of the restyled Land Rover Discovery Sport has been redesigned much more significantly - inside the SUV meets its inhabitants with a beautiful, modern and very presentable look, made in the spirit of the "older" models of the brand.
Directly in front of the driver is a weighty multi-steering wheel with a "chubby" four-spoke rim and a virtual instrument cluster with a 12.3-inch display (albeit in the "base" there are analog scales with a TFT screen between them). The noble center console is topped by a 10-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system, under which is a glossy touchpad and a pair of round multifunction knobs with displays inside them, managing climate and other minor functions.
As before, exceptionally high-quality finishing materials are used in the car's interior - pliable polymer, aluminum, smooth or slightly rough leather and glossy surfaces.
By default, the "apartments" of the crossover are five-seater, but for a surcharge, they can be equipped with a "purely children's" third row of seats, which is not suitable due to the tightness for transporting adult passengers. The front riders are supposed to have ergonomic seats with a well-developed side profile, a wide range of adjustments and all the "blessings of civilization." On the second row there is a successfully profiled three-seater sofa (however, the third person will be uncomfortable here both with the shape of the pillow and the protruding central tunnel), adjustable in the longitudinal direction and in the angle of inclination of the backrest, a normal supply of free space and such conveniences as an armrest and cup holders (and as an option - more heating and primitive climate control).
In the seven-seater version for luggage, the compact SUV retains a modest 157-liter compartment, but if the “gallery” is removed, the “hold” capacity increases to 897 liters. You can also fold the second row of seats in three sections in the ratio "40:20:40", which brings the scope of the load compartment to 1794 liters ("under the roof").
The car is equipped with either a stowaway or a full-size spare wheel, depending on the version.
Specifications
In the Russian market, the 2020 Land Rover Discovery Sport is offered in two diesel and two petrol versions, equipped with 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines of the Ingenium family with turbocharging, direct fuel injection, balance shafts, phase shifters and an electronically controlled water pump:
- armed with the basic diesel version D150 there are 150 horsepower at 4000 rpm and 380 Nm of torque at 1750-2500 rpm;
- more productive modification D180 already has 180 hp in its arsenal. at 4000 rpm and 430 Nm of peak thrust at 1500-3000 rpm;
- initial gasoline option P200 produces 200 hp. at 5500 rpm and 320 Nm of maximum potential at 1250-4500 rpm;
- well, the "top" performance P250 demonstrates 249 hp. at 5500 rpm and 365 Nm of torque at 1400-4500 rpm.
All engines are paired exclusively with a 9-band ZF automatic and an all-wheel drive transmission with a Haldex multi-plate clutch that manages the rear axle connection. But if the standard car is equipped with a simplified Efficient Driveline system, then as an option - a more advanced Active Driveline with electronically controlled clutch packages for each of the rear wheels and an additional clutch that deactivates the rear axle together with the propeller shaft.
From standstill to 100 km / h, the restyled crossover accelerates in 7.6-11.8 seconds, and reaches a maximum of 188-225 km / h. Diesel versions require an average of 5.6-5.9 liters of fuel for every "hundred" of mileage in the combined cycle, and gasoline - 8.0-8.2 liters.
In addition, the five-door "flaunts" excellent geometric cross-country ability: it can overcome fords up to 600 mm deep, and its entry and exit angles are 25 and 30.2 degrees, respectively (with the R-Dynamic package - 22.8 and 28.2 degrees).
At the heart of the updated Land Rover Discovery Sport is the modular "trolley" PTA (Premium Transverse Architecture) with a transverse engine, which is essentially a seriously upgraded D8 platform.
The power structure of the car is predominantly steel, but the hood, roof and fifth door are made of aluminum.
"In a circle" the crossover is equipped with independent suspensions with passive shock absorbers: in the front - MacPherson type with hydraulic levers, in the back - a multi-link with a small "integral" link between the fist and one of the transverse rods. Adaptive electronically controlled dampers are available for a surcharge.
"Briton" is equipped with a rack and pinion steering complex with electric power steering and a variable gear ratio. All wheels of the five-door have brakes with single-piston calipers, but only on the front axle - with ventilated discs measuring 325 or 349 mm, and on the rear - with simple "pancakes" of 300 or 325 mm.
The blue color, in the illustration above, denotes the "soft hybrid" system (mentioned at the beginning of the review and not available for the Russian market), consisting of a 48-volt auxiliary battery with a capacity of 200Wh, a control unit and a BiSG starter-generator.

In the Russian market, the 2020 Land Rover Discovery Sport can be purchased in seven versions - Standard, S, SE, HSE, R-Dynamic S, R-Dynamic SE and R-Dynamic HSE.
For a standard car they ask for a minimum of 2,930,000 rubles - this is how much they want for a version with a 200-horsepower gasoline engine, while diesel versions of the D150 and D200 will have to pay at least 2,939,000 and 3,038,000 rubles, respectively, and the P250 modification will cost from 3,128,000 rubles.
