The second "release" of the Volkswagen California with the in-house marking "T4" - a versatile vehicle for camping and long-distance travel - was presented in 1992, radically changing from its predecessor, both visually and constructively. Well, in 1994, the presentation of a minibus in the performance "Exclusive" with a high roof and an extended wheelbase took place.

The "life path" of this "German" came to an end only in 2003 - it was then that the model of the next generation was revealed to the world.

The 'second' Volkswagen California is a camping vehicle with a functional living area inside, available in standard or extended wheelbases.

The length of the "house on wheels" is 4707-5107 mm, the width does not exceed 1840 mm, and the height reaches 1940-2430 mm. The distance between the axles of the "German" varies from 2920 to 3320 mm, depending on the modification.

Specifications. "California" of the second incarnation was set in motion by moderately powerful motors, which worked in conjunction with a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission and driving front wheels:

  • The petrol "team" of the car included in-line "fours" and V-shaped "sixes" for 2.5-2.8 liters with a multi-point "supply" of fuel, producing 110-204 horsepower and 190-270 Nm of torque.
  • The diesel range included five-cylinder units with a volume of 2.4-2.5 liters (both atmospheric and turbocharged) with direct "power" and a 10-valve structure, generating 79-102 "mares" and 164-250 Nm of maximum thrust.

The Volkswagen California T4 is based on the Volkswagen T4 front-wheel drive platform with a transversely mounted engine in the front. The front suspension of the car is independent, on double levers, and the rear is a system on trailing arms with telescopic shock absorbers and steel springs.
The rack and pinion steering complex "German" is supplemented by a hydraulic power steering, and its braking potential is formed by disc mechanisms on all wheels (with ABS by default).

"California" of the second generation can boast: good looks, high-quality assembly, high functionality, good equipment, moderately powerful motors, reliable design, affordable service and decent dynamics.
But there are some "sins" behind him: a large fuel "appetite", a weak head light and a somewhat harsh suspension.
