The Japanese have long tested the patience of fans of the model, since the Toyota FT-1 concept, which later became the prototype of the Supra, was presented back in January 2014 at the International North American Auto Show, and in the future, the company continually postponed the launch of the two-door into production, waiting for the partners to create a car from BMW will present a new roadster Z4 ...

As a result, the production version of the fifth generation Toyota GR Supra with the in-plant index "A90" was first shown to the general public only in July 2018 at the Festival of Speed ​​in Goodwood, England, but then its body was carefully covered with camouflage film. The full-fledged premiere of the sports car "thundered" only in January 2019 at the show in Detroit, and a few months later it "showed off" in front of the European public at the stands of the Geneva Auto Show.

Interestingly, the cult model of the next generation, which returned to the world market after a seventeen-year hiatus, turned out to be nothing more than a "disguised" BMW Z4 of the latest incarnation - the use of German technologies allowed the Japanese automaker to significantly save on the development and production of a two-door.

The Toyota GR Supra looks, if not stunning, then expressive, attractive, sporty fit and very bold - even in dense city traffic, the car will instantly draw attention to itself. The energetic front end of the sports car is crowned with a piercing gaze of LED optics with branching running lights and a relief bumper, a large area of ​​which is occupied by air intakes, and its harmonious and logical feed carries spectacular lights, a stylish arch-spoiler on the trunk lid and an impressive bumper with a developed diffuser and a pair of large-caliber "exhaust pipes.

On the side, the two-door boasts a squat, energetic and balanced silhouette with a long hood, compact overhangs, expressive sides, muscular "hips", large flashes of wheel arches and a graceful "hump" of the roof, flowing into a small "tail" of the trunk.

In length, the "fifth" Toyota Supra extends to 4380 mm, of which 2470 mm is the distance between the wheelsets of the front and rear axles, the width is 1865 mm, and the height is 1290-1295 mm.

The curb weight of the sports car varies from 1410 to 1520 kg, depending on the modification.

The interior of the fifth generation "Supra" is made in a minimalist style - although it looks beautiful and modern, it does not catch the eye with anything special, except perhaps only the air ducts, "stretched" from window to window.

Otherwise, everything is perceived as something ordinary - a three-spoke multi-steering wheel with a raised rim, a digital instrument cluster with a dominant tachometer and a laconic center console with a protruding 8.8-inch touchscreen of the media center, under which exemplary audio and climate control units are located.

The interior of the Toyota GR Supra has a strictly two-seater layout - bucket seats with well-developed lateral support, integrated head restraints and rigid padding, which can be heated and electrically adjustable, are installed here.

The Japanese sports car has at its disposal a trunk that is quite suitable for everyday use - its useful volume is 280 liters. True, the compartment itself has an intricate shape and a narrow opening.

For the Toyota Supra A90, a choice of two aluminum gasoline engines, borrowed from the BMW Z4, are offered, which are combined exclusively with an 8-band hydromechanical automatic transmission, a rear-wheel drive transmission and an active differential with planetary overdrive gears:

  • The first option is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder B48 unit with in-line architecture, turbocharging, direct fuel injection, 16-valve DOHC timing belt and variable valve timing, available in two boost levels:
    • 197 horsepower at 4500-6500 rpm and 320 Nm of torque at 1450-4200 rpm;
    • 258 h.p. at 5000-6500 rpm and 400 Nm of rotational potential at 1550-4400 rpm.
  • The "top" versions are "armed" with an inline 3.0-liter "six" BMW B58 with a two-flow turbocharger, "direct" fuel injection, phase shifters at the inlet and outlet and a 32-valve timing structure, which generates 340 hp. at 5000-6500 rpm and 500 Nm of available thrust at 1600-4500 rpm.

Acceleration from zero to the first "hundred" takes 4.3-6.5 seconds for a two-door, and its maximum capabilities do not exceed 250 km / h (due to the electronic limiter).

In the combined cycle of movement, the sports car "digests" from 6.1 to 7.5 liters of fuel for every 100 km of run, depending on the version.


The fifth generation Toyota GR Supra is based on the modular rear-wheel-drive architecture CLAR, borrowed from the German automaker BMW, which implies a longitudinal arrangement of the power unit and the widespread use of not only high-strength steel grades, but also aluminum in the body structure.

By default, the coupe relies on fully independent suspensions: front - double wishbone, rear - multi-link. However, if the 197-horsepower modification is content with a passive chassis, then the more powerful versions are equipped with adaptive electronically controlled shock absorbers.

The sports car boasts a rack and pinion steering system and an active electric power steering. All two-door wheels are equipped with ventilated disc brakes, supplemented by various electronic assistants. At the same time, the "top" version with a 340-horsepower "six" is distinguished by more powerful Brembo brakes with four-piston front calipers.


In the Russian market, the fifth generation Toyota Supra is offered exclusively with a 3.0-liter engine in two equipment options - "Passion" and "A90 Edition" (there will be only three of these in our country).

For a sports car in the initial version, they ask for a minimum of 5,534,000 rubles, and its basic functionality includes: eight airbags, 19-inch alloy wheels, full LED optics, leather interior trim, electric and heated seats, dual-zone climate control, a media center with 8.8-inch screen, head-up display, adaptive suspension, reversing camera, front and rear parking sensors, premium audio system with 12 speakers, blind spot monitoring, ABS, ESP and the darkness of other modern equipment.
